As a part of TYS’s jubilee year, TYS organized a photo contest on Instagram where tenants could share their pictures related to student life and living on TYS. The winning picture was taken by Keith Yamada, who came to Turku around 3,5 years ago to do his Master’s degree in bioinformatics in the university of Turku.
Keith rents an apartment from TYS and is pleased with the facilities in the Student Village, which is where the winning picture for the Instagram competition was taken as well. ”I take all my pictures with my phone. I have an eye for aesthetics and take photos of just about anything that looks nice. ” Based on Keith’s Instagram feed, he is an active photographer.
The competition jury described the winning picture, that there was a nice contrast on the photo as the photo was taken on a rather grey day but then there was this sudden beauty of a rainbow in the middle of beton block houses. The picture was one of the most liked on TYS’s Instagram photo contest and it was chosen as a winner.
Keith chose to come to Turku because of the great reputation of its universities. Although he is used to sunny California, Keith says he doesn’t mind the dark and cold Nordic winter. He is currently researching anticancer drugs built from bacteria. Keith tells: ”I applied to Helsinki and Tampere as well, but Turku was always my first choice as it’s on the coast and closer to Sweden”. He has enjoyed his studies and says the Finnish university has a more relaxed atmosphere than the universities in America. The classes in Turku are smaller and the professors more approachable. Keith says: ”Here we have multiple chances to pass the final exams of each course. In the US, we have to redo the entire course if we don’t pass the test at once!”
As a prize, Keith got to choose a new camera for himself and he chose a new GoPro camera. Congratulations Keith! This video is filmed with the new camera:
