First things first: If you’re reading this, most probably you’re planning on to come to Turku and you’re researching more information about the life on campus, the places you could live at, the city, etc. You could be Finn, from a different city, planning on to move to Turku; maybe you’re ”Erasmus” and you wanted to experience something different and Finland doesn’t seem a bad idea. Maybe you’re an exchange student and you’re looking to have the best six months of your life; maybe you’re from a distant country -just like me- and you’re going to study here for a year or two, and feel so lost, not knowing what to expect -just like I was-.
Or maybe, you’re already here and you’re getting settled. You have a clearer idea of what Turku looks like, the food and the people, the clubs and the supermarkets….
I dare to say that it doesn’t really matter what your situation is, we all share the same feelings: Happiness/Sadness; Stress/Excitement; fears and doubts, just to mention a few.
Since all these feelings are overwhelming and hard to express, I’m not going to enter into detail, luckily, there’s a perfect song to describe it:
”Sleep on the floor” by The Lumineers.
If you haven’t heard it, let me summarize it:
It’s about packing a couple things and leave everything behind.
It’s about taking a leap of faith, eyes closed, not knowing what’s coming next.
It’s about the journey itself, not the destination.
It’s about using your fear to build bridges, not to freeze on the edge.
It’s about you, reading blogs about Turku, and also about me, writing posts with useful tips, just to make our lives easier.
It’s about us, playing a song as a mantra , not minding if we have to sleep on the floor for a couple nights, pursuing a dream.
So first things first: if you’re reading this, your life already has changed. You’ve come a long way, and that my dear, takes a lot of courage.
Welcome to Turku.
