TYS's Environmental Program

IMG 1801
The entire TYS's staff are committed to following the environmental policy program. TYS wishes that tenants are also committing themselves to this program. Here, the commitment means that either party, upon noticing negligence concerning environmental matters, takes action and attempts to promote the environmental policy through guidance.

TYS's goal is to build and renovate buildings as ecological as possible when keeping in mind in a long term planning that the rent levels can't rise too much. Maintenance and repairs are a way to try to form and date a product's life span, taking into consideration that harmful environmental effects are kept to a bare minimum. The assortment and gathering of waste varies somewhat between the different area maintenance companies.

We'd like to stress that simply devising a program does not bring results. Every employee is to understand that for the program to work everyone needs to pitch in. This means direct action as well as supervision to make it work. The operation of the environmental program is a dynamic process that requires constant attentiveness for it to work. We are constantly striving to improve modes of operation that affect environmental matters and because of this, additions will be made to this environmental program when necessary and at least once per year.

The use of energy and water

TYS's central control room helps monitor the use of heat, electricity and water, and these are compared with the budgeted consumption, as well as the average consumption in Finnish student housing (SOA). Radical aberrations from the norm will be responded to immediately once they are found, and their cause will be investigated.

Turku Energia delivers electric energy to TYS, all energy that TYS uses is green energy.

Waste assortment and recycling

The goal of assortment is to minimize mixed waste, The aim is to get the residents to sort the waste in their residences into at least five categories. These are paper, glass, metal and mixed waste. In new and renovated residences, this has been taken into consideration if possible.

See the instructions given to TYS's tenants: Recycling Waste. These instructions should be followed as close as possible.

Residents have the opportunity to leave smaller items on the recycling shelf in the waste shed beside building 46A and 1A. The Ekotori recycling center, which was founded by the City of Turku, is located near the Student Village (Kirkkotie 6-10). The Emmaus recycling market is also located at the same address as the Ekotori.
