Housing Options
TYS has a wide range of apartments. The apartment for exchange students are either the Student Hostel room or a shared apartment. It is possible to change to another TYS apartment via internal transfer, if you stay in Turku more than one semester. All exchange students’ apartments have basic furniture; standard size single bed with mattress, desk, chair, bookshelves and wardrobe.
Rent includes water, electricity and internet connection (Kyläverkko). All apartments have internet connections ready to use, you just need to have a cable wire to get connected. For more information about the network and its technical capacity: www.yok.utu.fi.
TYS’s tenants have some free maintenance services available via the notice of defects form. Housing complexes have saunas, laundries and common rooms for tenants’ use. Sauna and laundry turns are reserved via internet reservation systems, the reservation links are available in TYS’s website. Tenant committees are in charge of the common rooms.

The Student Hostel
The Student Hostel is located in the western part of the Student Village. The Student Hostel apartment is a single room with common kitchen. The rooms are 18 m2 and consist of private bedroom and bathroom. A common kitchen is located in the end of each corridor and shared by 12 tenants who are living in that corridor. Common kitchens are locked during night-time (23.00-6.00). There is a small refrigerator in each Student Hostel room.
These apartments are a little bit more expensive than shared apartments and there is a limited number of rooms in the Student Hostel.

Shared apartment
Shared apartments for exchange students are located in six (6) different housing locations: Kuunsilta, Haliskylä, Pilvilinna, Päivänpaiste, Aamurusko2 and Iltakajo. In a shared apartment live 2-4 persons of same sex. Every tenant has an own lockable bedroom. The kitchen, bathroom and hallway are shared. The total sizes of shared apartments are 42-70 m2, depending on the number of persons living there.
It’s also possible to apply for a mixed shared apartment, for example together with a student friend of opposite sex.
Special remarks
In leases made after the 25th of November 1999 it is forbidden to keep pets in communal or shared apartments.
Smoking is forbidden in all TYS’s housing locations, inside the apartments as well as in all common areas (staircases, lifts, basements, common rooms, saunas and washrooms). This considers all leases made after the 1st of December 2007.
Additional information
Residents are expected to provide their own bedding, towels, kitchen utensils etc. The Student Unions usually provide starting packages that include a pillow, a blanket, curtains, a cooking pot, a sharp cutting knife, a dinner plate,a soup plate, a glass, a mug, cooking items (spatula or cooking spoon), a knife, a fork, a spoon, a teaspoon, and a can opener.
