All full-time students of post-secondary schools in Turku can apply for an apartment from TYS. When the right to study ends, also the right to tenancy ends. If necessary, TYS terminates the tenancy agreement. The right of tenancy can be extended after graduation from the university, by appeal, with a maximum of one year. Please note that exchange students have separate application. See the presentations of student housing locations.
TYS has also youth apartments which are available for 18-29 year old persons, non-students, whose hometown is Turku. For these apartments the leases are made fixed-term, for maximum five years. Youth apartments are located in Ironside and in Kiertotähti.
Time limits for leases
The lease is made for continual or to a fixed-term period. Mostly the contracts are made continual, for example longer degree programmes in the universities. The lease is made for fixed-term period for example to youth tenants, tenants in Auranhelmi and Henrikki or according to the approximately estimation of the graduation time (for example exchange students, students of Turku Vocational Institute or other institute, students of separate Master’s program and so on).
Leases for youth tenants and tenants of Auranhelmi and Henrikki are made for a fixed period of maximum 5 years.
For master’s students the contract is done for two yeras, if the studies take longer it’s possible to extend the lease.
For postgraduate students the contract is usually made for one year at a time.
For researchers a lease is made for maximum one year and only if there are available apartments.
It’s possible to change to another apartments if your life situation changes. You can change for example, from a shared apartment to a single or two room apartment, or when your family grows to a bigger family apartment. With an addition to the family you can move to a larger residence (read more about internal transfer). The Housing Office will help you to find the best accommodation option.
